Tent on the Green is a Worship and Encounter Festival held in the centre of Winchester during Pentecost weekend. Originally staged by Burn 24-7 Winchester in partnership with Winchester Cathedral, 48 hours of non-stop worship were the core activity to both the 2016 and 2017 events, opening on Friday evening, gathering momentum through the weekend and leading to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Thy Kingdom Come prayer event on Sunday evening. The 2017 event also gave local churches the opportunity to bring their own ministries to the Green.

“Tent on the Green will be back in the not too distant future”

Tent on the Green seeks to place worship and opportunities to encounter God at the heart of the city of Winchester and to inspire other cities across the UK to do the same. Raising both Wildfire Youth and Encounter Ministry tents alongside the main Worship Tent on the Cathedral Green for 2 years running gave a perfect opportunity for members of the public to discover God in a relaxed, non-pressurised way fit for the 21st century. Encounter opportunities included Spiritual Readings or Blessings, Dream Interpretation, Prophetic Photography and Art and Healing on the Streets. In addition, overnight sessions for the 2017 event took place inside Winchester Cathedral – the first time this has ever taken place in the UK. Over 2 years, several hundred came to faith, thousands received a personal word from God, many were impacted by physical healings and the city rediscovered worship and prayer as an important part of its everyday rhythm of life.

A chance to worship together as a city on Pentecost Sunday and to hear the gospel preached by both Bishop and Dean of Winchester, and other city evangelists has led to a number of churches beginning to catch the vision for One church – One Kingdom across the city and a number of other growing programmes and ministries including the Wildfire Youth movement, The Rapid Discipleship Course, and the Kings City Fund. Each of these new pioneering programmes is carving a new landscape of possibilities for the Kingdom to engage with the society which it serves and inspiring others into developing new and authentic initiatives to build Church of tomorrow today.
